REPORT SHINES LIGHT ON GUN CRIME IN SA

The report reveals that as many as 20 people are killed in gun-related incidents every single day.

The findings are the result of a collaboration between researchers at the University of Cape Town and the University of Texas.

It puts the cost of treating gunshot wounds at well over R1 billion a year.

In 2012, South Africa was ranked eleventh on the United Nation’s list of most dangerous countries to live in.

At that time, the country recorded an average of 31 murders per 100,000 people, with the Western Cape recording 41 per 100,000.

Crime figures have remained in the same range since.

The report’s authors point out that 45% of the murders were committed with a firearm.

This means, that on average, there are more than 20 people killed in South Africa by gun-toting individuals every day.
