The airport has been in the headlines following several incidents this year.
In March, more than R20 million was stolen by men dressed as police officers.
There have also been reports of syndicates working from the airport that target travellers in hijackings and house robberies.
Mbalula’s spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga says they need to improve security.
“We need to upgrade security there. We will be meeting with some of the cluster ministers of security, Home Affairs and local government.”
In May, six business executives were hijacked in a minibus van after their driver was executed on the highway off-ramp towards the airport.
The six were abandoned near Rhodesfield after being robbed of their possessions.
