CAPE TOWN – Parliament’s inquiry into the funding of political partiesgets underway on Thursday morning.
The ad hoc committee set up to consider the public and private funding of parties is set to meet to consider the submissions it’s received and finalise its programme.
Seventeen organisations and individuals, including the African National Congress, Cosatu and lobby group My Vote Counts, have made written submissions to the committee.
Ad hoc committee chairperson Vincent Smith says he’s happy with the submissions received.
“Political parties, organised labour, academia, ordinary South Africans – so I am pleased with the spread of the submissions.”
Only two political parties, the ANC and the Azanian People’s Organisation, have made submissions.
“No, I’m not surprised, I suspect that most of the political parties will, through their representatives (on the committee), proffer their arguments.”
Smith says he will propose that all 17 organisations and individuals who have made submissions be invited to make presentations during public hearings on 15 and 16 August.
