NEW IEC CHIEF TO PRIORITISE INTEGRITY OF COMMISSION

JOHANNESBURG – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)’s newly appointed chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo says one of his main priorities will be to improve the integrity of the commission.

His appointment was announced on Wednesday after 20 years at the IEC.

In 2014, the commission experienced turbulence when its chair Pansy Tlakula resigned after a year of fighting to clear her name.

The Public Protector found that Tlakula flouted procurement regulations in securing a lease for the IEC office in Centurion.

Mamabolo says that he will now aim to sharpen the conduct of staff and run the election process as prescribed.

“We’ve got to ensure that our logistics are impeccable and so on, and that we run the process in terms of prescripts because the greater the scrutiny, I think that’s welcome.

“We’ll be transparent but we’ll also run the process in terms of prescripts.”qd0o9hhchyj3gknqcxn2
