JOHANNESBURG – Iraq’s ambassador to South Africa says that one person has undergone an operation after a group of Iraqi delegates were assaulted and robbed at gunpoint shortly after arriving in Johannesburg.
The group had been travelling from OR Tambo International Airport to their hotel when they were stopped by armed men on Corlett Drive off-ramp on Thursday night.
The robbers made off with valuables including cash and jewellery.
Ambassador Saad Kindeel says the Iraqi man who sustained injuries to his head is out of danger.
But Kindeel won’t confirm whether he’s still in hospital.
“One of the delegation was hit on his head and was injured and transferred to hospital. His condition is stable.”
The ambassador says that a case has been opened with police.
“They already took a statement and they are investigating the case.”
It’s not yet clear whether extra security has now been put in place around the delegation, or precisely why they are in the country but it’s understood that they are continuing with their official visit.
