JOHANNESBURG – The father of a grade two pupil who took a loaded gun and ammunition to a Brakpan school is on the run.
The boy brought the firearm to school on Tuesday after an altercation with a fellow pupil.
The police’s Pearl van Staad said: “According to the report by a probation officer the mother was interviewed and she mentioned that they are not married, so he comes and goes.”
Meanwhile, Gauteng MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the seven-year-old told teachers that he was only trying to “defend himself”.
Last week, activists called on the government to install cameras in classrooms to improve teaching and learning in the wake of several cases of violence and bullying at schools.
In the latest incident, a grade seven boy died at his home in Ekurhuleni on Gauteng’s East Rand, possibly as a result of injuries he sustained while being bullied on school grounds.
The incident has further raised concerns over the safety of children at schools.
