CITY OF CT COUNCILLOR CONFIDENT ABOUT AFFORDABLE HOUSING DECLARATION

bqyl2tt24lxgufd3pf9dCAPE TOWN – Cape Town councillor Brett Herron says that he is confident that the city council will support a proposal to declare the entire city a “restructuring zone” for affordable housing.

Social housing projects must be built in demarcated areas to access grants from national government.

The bold new proposal to combat apartheid spatial planning is expected to be tabled in council next month but it also needs the approval of provincial and national government.

The provincial government’s decision to sell the old Tafelberg schoolsite in Sea Point instead of making it available for social housing is a contentious issue in the city.

One of the reasons for the approval of the transaction was that the site did not fall within a restructuring zone.
Herron, the councillor responsible for urban development, says that the new proposal will deal with any uncertainty around zoning issues.

“I’m confident council will understand the urgency with which we need to approach the provision of affordable housing in Cape Town.”

Herron is also expected to unveil the municipality’s new approach to affordable and inclusionary housing at an event on Tuesday.
